Srīnagar's air quality reflects the Kashmir Valley's severe topographic enclosure at 1,585 metres surrounded by the Himalayas, the Pir Panjal range, and the Karakoram, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the residential wood and biomass burning generating elevated PM2.5 under persistent winter temperature inversions. The valley's near-complete mountain enclosure creates some of South Asia's most extreme winter pollution trapping, while the iconic Dal Lake's moisture and the surrounding Chinar forest provide limited natural ventilation during the summer months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Srīnagar right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Srīnagar is poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 71.7/100. Pollution peaks around 11:30 AM (O3: 71.7/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Srīnagar?

When is air pollution at its worst in Srīnagar?

The biggest local contributors to pollution in Srīnagar are traffic emissions along with wood-burning stoves, particularly once temperature inversions set in over the valley. The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. This is most pronounced in winter, when inversions are more frequent.

Are air quality levels in Srīnagar based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
