Port-au-Prince's air quality reflects the flat Haitian Gulf of Gonâve coastal position on the Cul-de-Sac Plain at 37 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the vehicle density, charcoal burning — Haiti having the Caribbean's highest charcoal dependency — and earthquake-reconstruction corridor generating elevated PM2.5 and black carbon. The Caribbean trade winds provide limited maritime ventilation, while the extraordinary charcoal dependency and the 2010 earthquake's persistent reconstruction dust maintain Port-au-Prince among the Caribbean's more severely challenged major capital environments throughout the year.

Dust carried on these winds adds substantially to particulate levels. Onshore breezes usually help clear the air, but pollution can build up when winds are light.

Are air quality levels in Port-au-Prince based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
