Guatemala City's air quality reflects the Guatemalan volcanic highland's enclosed Guatemala Valley basin at 1,502 metres surrounded by the Pacific and Sierra Madre ranges, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the extraordinary vehicle density, industrial, and construction corridor generating elevated PM2.5. The basin's topographic enclosure creates concentration under inversions, while the elevated altitude worsens ozone formation and Guatemala City generally maintains moderate to elevated Central American highland capital readings throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Guatemala City right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Guatemala City is fair. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 25.5/100. Pollution peaks around 8:00 AM (O3: 25.5/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Guatemala City?

The biggest local contributors to pollution in Guatemala City are traffic emissions and construction dust, particularly once the surrounding valley traps air close to the ground. Topographic enclosure in the valley lets pollution accumulate rather than clear out. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape.

Are air quality levels in Guatemala City based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
