Lille's air quality reflects its position at the heart of the Franco-Belgian conurbation on the Nord-Pas-de-Calais plateau, with vehicle traffic on the A1 Paris-Brussels motorway corridor and the surrounding textile and industrial manufacturing legacy contributing sustained elevated NO₂ and PM2.5. Cross-border pollution from the Belgian industrial Sambre-Meuse valley and the surrounding metropolitan area's high vehicle density make the Lille-Roubaix-Tourcoing conurbation one of northern France's more challenging urban air quality environments.
