Dijon's air quality reflects its position in the Saône valley at the northern end of the Burgundy wine corridor, with vehicle traffic on the A31 and A36 motorways and the surrounding agri-food and pharmaceutical manufacturing industry contributing local sources. The Côte d'Or hills to the west and the Jura plateau to the east create partial topographic enclosure, while the Saône valley provides the primary natural ventilation corridor and Atlantic westerlies generally provide adequate background dispersal across this historic Burgundian capital.
