Amiens's air quality reflects its position in the Somme valley in the flat Picardie agricultural plain, with vehicle traffic on the A1 Paris-Lille motorway and the surrounding agri-food processing and logistics industry contributing local sources. Atlantic westerlies from the English Channel generally provide reliable ventilation across the flat northern French plain, while agricultural ammonia from the intensive Picardie farming landscape contributes secondary particulate formation, and the flat terrain and Channel proximity generally prevent the severe pollution accumulation seen in more topographically enclosed French cities.
