Santiago in Dominican Republic reflects the flat Cibao Valley's Yaque del Norte River position at 178 metres between the Cordillera Central and the Septentrional range, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the vehicle density, manufacturing, and construction corridor generating elevated PM2.5. The valley's topographic enclosure creates concentration under inversions, while the Atlantic northeast trade winds provide seasonal ventilation and Santiago generally maintains moderate to elevated Dominican Republic industrial valley metropolitan readings throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Santiago right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Santiago is very poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 90.0/100. Pollution peaks around 12:00 AM (PM10: 90.0/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Santiago?
On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Santiago will be better than today, with AQI forecast at poor at 77.1/100. Pollution peaks around 6:00 AM (PM10: 77.1/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Santiago?
In Santiago, traffic on the surrounding roads, light manufacturing, as well as ongoing construction work are the main local sources, with conditions worsening when calm, stagnant conditions settle in the surrounding valley. The bowl-like terrain here limits how quickly pollutants can escape. Strong seasonal winds can lift dust from the surrounding dry terrain and push particulate levels sharply higher.
Are air quality levels in Santiago based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
