Worst air pollution Zhongwei, today and tomorrow

Today (16 July): Air quality in Zhongwei is poor. AQI and O3 are poor; NO2 is medium; PM2.5, PM10, SO2, CO, HCHO, and PM1 are good. Pollution peaks around 6:00 PM (O3: 61.6/100).
Tomorrow (17 July 2026): Air quality in Zhongwei is poor. PM2.5 increases to medium; PM10 increases to poor; O3 decreases to fair; all other pollutants stay as today. Pollution peaks around 7:00 PM (PM10: 65.6/100). Airmine updates local air quality forecasts four times daily.

Zhongwei's air quality reflects the Ningxia Yellow River valley's semi-arid position at 1,224 metres in the Hexi Corridor, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the coal power, agricultural, and tourism corridor contributing local sources. Windblown Tengger and Badain Jaran desert dust generates elevated PM10 during spring dust storms, while winter coal heating under inversions generates elevated PM2.5 and the Yellow River valley's desert gateway position creates distinctive dust and industrial emission dynamics throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Zhongwei right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Zhongwei is poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 61.6/100. Pollution peaks around 6:00 PM (O3: 61.6/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Zhongwei?

On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Zhongwei will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at poor at 65.6/100. Pollution peaks around 7:00 PM (PM10: 65.6/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Zhongwei?

In Zhongwei, traffic emissions, agricultural activity, together with tourism-related traffic are the main local sources, with conditions worsening when temperature inversions set in over the valley. The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. Strong seasonal winds can lift dust from the surrounding dry terrain and push particulate levels sharply higher.

Are air quality levels in Zhongwei based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
