Zhangye's air quality reflects the Gansu Hexi Corridor's flat oasis position at 1,474 metres between the Qilian Mountains and the Badain Jaran Desert, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the agricultural, food processing, and tourism corridor contributing local sources. Windblown desert dust from the Badain Jaran generates elevated PM10 during spring dust storms, while the elevated Hexi Corridor position aids summer dispersal and Zhangye generally maintains moderate Gansu northwestern corridor readings throughout most of the year.

These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape. Such events are most common in the drier shoulder seasons.

Are air quality levels in Zhangye based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
