Yinchuan's air quality reflects the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region's flat Yellow River plain at 1,100 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the coal power, chemical, and agricultural corridor generating elevated industrial SO₂. Windblown loess and Yellow River valley dust contributes elevated PM10 during dry windy periods, while winter coal heating under inversions and the Yellow River valley's topographic setting generally maintain Yinchuan at moderate to elevated northwestern Chinese capital city readings throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Yinchuan right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Yinchuan is very poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 91.8/100. Pollution peaks around 10:00 PM (NO2: 91.8/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Yinchuan?
On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Yinchuan will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at very poor at 94.7/100. Pollution peaks around 9:00 PM (NO2: 94.7/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Yinchuan?
Air quality in Yinchuan tends to be worse when traffic on the surrounding roads, steel, cement, and chemical production, together with agricultural activity build up and temperature inversions set in over the valley. Topographic enclosure in the valley lets pollution accumulate rather than clear out. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape.
Are air quality levels in Yinchuan based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
