Yanjiang's air quality reflects the Sichuan Basin's Yanjiang River valley position near Ziyang, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the chemical, glass, and manufacturing corridor contributing local sources. The Sichuan Basin's topographic enclosure creates concentration under winter inversions, while the broader Chengdu metropolitan industrial background influences the corridor and the area generally maintains moderate Sichuan Basin provincial readings throughout most of the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Yanjiang?

Air quality in Yanjiang tends to be worse when road traffic, petrochemical and refining operations, and light manufacturing build up and temperature inversions set in over the valley. The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape.

Are air quality levels in Yanjiang based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
