Xinzhou's air quality reflects the Shanxi northern Hutuo River valley's partial enclosure between the Taihang and Lüliang mountains, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the coal mining and agricultural corridor contributing local sources. The surrounding mountain ranges create topographic enclosure, while winter coal heating under valley inversions and the coal mining dust compound to maintain moderate to elevated Shanxi northern corridor readings throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Xinzhou right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Xinzhou is fair. PM2.5 is the main pollutant at 25.4/100. Pollution peaks around 1:00 AM (NO2: 56.3/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Xinzhou?

When is air pollution at its worst in Xinzhou?

Pollution in Xinzhou typically rises when road traffic, mining and quarrying operations, and agricultural activity combine, especially once temperature inversions set in over the valley. The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape.

Are air quality levels in Xinzhou based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
