Xinhualu's air quality reflects the flat central Henan agricultural and urban corridor, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and agricultural processing and manufacturing contributing local sources. Winter residential coal and biomass burning generates elevated PM2.5 under inversions, while the flat North China terrain allows reasonable summer dispersal and the regional industrial background elevates winter readings throughout the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Xinhualu?
Xinhualu usually sees its poorest air quality when vehicle traffic, manufacturing and food processing, along with agricultural activity coincide with periods when dry spells bring strong winds. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape. Coal and wood used for winter heating add substantially to particulate levels.
Are air quality levels in Xinhualu based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
