Xianyang's air quality reflects the Guanzhong Basin's Wei River valley immediately west of Xi'an, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the Xi'an metropolitan spillover manufacturing and Xianyang International Airport's aviation operations contributing local sources. The Guanzhong Basin's topographic enclosure creates severe winter inversions, while the Xi'an-Xianyang metropolitan combined emissions make this one of China's most aerially enclosed inland metropolitan environments throughout the winter months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Xianyang right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Xianyang is very poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 100/100. Pollution peaks around 1:00 PM (O3: 100/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Xianyang?

On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Xianyang will be better than today, with AQI forecast at poor at 76.4/100. Pollution peaks around 5:00 PM (O3: 76.4/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Xianyang?

In Xianyang, traffic emissions, aircraft operations at the local air base, as well as manufacturing and food processing are the main local sources, with conditions worsening when the surrounding valley traps air close to the ground. The bowl-like terrain here limits how quickly pollutants can escape. The effect is strongest during the colder months, when inversions set in most often.

Are air quality levels in Xianyang based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
