Xiantao's air quality reflects the flat Hubei Jianghan Plain's Hanjiang River lowland position adjacent to Wuhan, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the nonwoven fabric — Xiantao being China's spunbonded fabric capital — and agricultural corridor contributing local sources. The Yangtze valley's flat plain concentrates emissions under winter inversions, while the broader Wuhan metropolitan industrial background and the fabric manufacturing's distinctive fibre dust emissions influence the corridor throughout most of the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Xiantao?
Pollution in Xiantao typically rises when traffic on the surrounding roads, manufacturing and food processing, as well as crop farming combine, especially once the surrounding valley traps air close to the ground. The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape.
Are air quality levels in Xiantao based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
