Xi'an's air quality reflects the Guanzhong Basin's severe topographic enclosure between the Qinling and Loess Plateau ranges at 400 metres, with vehicle traffic on the Second Ring Road and surrounding manufacturing and residential heating generating elevated PM2.5 under persistent winter inversions. The basin's nearly complete mountain enclosure creates some of inland China's most severe winter pollution trapping, while summer air quality is considerably better with monsoon ventilation throughout the warmer months.
