Wuzhong's air quality reflects the Ningxia central Yellow River plain at 1,130 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the coal power, agricultural, and light manufacturing corridor contributing local sources. Windblown loess and desert dust contributes elevated PM10, while winter coal heating under inversions generates elevated PM2.5 and the Yellow River valley's topographic setting generally maintains moderate to elevated Ningxia provincial central corridor readings throughout the year.

The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. Dust carried on these winds adds substantially to particulate levels.

Are air quality levels in Wuzhong based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
