Tongshan's air quality reflects the flat Jiangsu Xuzhou metropolitan position, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the coal mining, steel, and manufacturing corridor generating elevated industrial PM2.5 and SO₂. Winter residential coal heating compounds the industrial background, while the flat terrain allows reasonable dispersal on westerly days and the Xuzhou coalfield's historical industrial character maintains moderate to elevated Jiangsu provincial readings throughout most of the year.
