Taiyuan's air quality reflects the Shanxi Fen River valley's enclosed basin at 800 metres surrounded by the Lüliang and Taihang mountains, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the coal mining, coking, and iron and steel corridor generating elevated industrial SO₂ and PM2.5. The valley's near-complete mountain enclosure and winter anticyclonic inversions create among China's more severe provincial capital winter pollution episodes, while the coal and coke industrial legacy maintains Taiyuan as Shanxi's most distinctively coal-defined urban air quality environment throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Taiyuan right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Taiyuan is poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 60.4/100. Pollution peaks around 12:00 AM (NO2: 60.4/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Taiyuan?

On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Taiyuan will be better than today, with PM1 forecast at fair at 21.7/100. Pollution peaks around 10:00 PM (NO2: 59.1/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Taiyuan?

In Taiyuan, road traffic, heavy industrial and chemical processing, together with mining operations are the main local sources, with conditions worsening when the surrounding valley traps air close to the ground. The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape.

Are air quality levels in Taiyuan based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
