Shihezi's air quality reflects the Xinjiang northern Dzungarian Basin's Manas River oasis at 443 metres surrounded by the Tian Shan, with vehicle traffic and the agricultural corps, chemical, and manufacturing corridor contributing local sources. Windblown Junggar Desert dust generates elevated PM10, while the oasis enclosure concentrates emissions under calm arid conditions and Shihezi generally maintains moderate to elevated Xinjiang northern agricultural corps city readings throughout most of the year.

Dust carried on these winds adds substantially to particulate levels. Such events are most common in the drier shoulder seasons.

Are air quality levels in Shihezi based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
