Shaoguan's air quality reflects the Guangdong northern Beijiang River valley's partial enclosure between the Nanling Mountains, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the nonferrous metal smelting, coal mining, and manufacturing corridor generating elevated heavy metal PM2.5. The surrounding Nanling Mountains create topographic enclosure, while the smelting operations' distinctive lead, zinc, and heavy metal emissions represent Shaoguan's most industrially unique air quality contribution and valley inversions create seasonal concentration episodes throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Shaoguan right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Shaoguan is fair. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 39.7/100. Pollution peaks around 4:00 PM (O3: 39.7/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Shaoguan?

When is air pollution at its worst in Shaoguan?

Shaoguan usually sees its poorest air quality when vehicle traffic, mining and quarrying operations, as well as manufacturing activity coincide with periods when calm, stagnant conditions settle in the surrounding valley. The bowl-like terrain here limits how quickly pollutants can escape. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape.

Are air quality levels in Shaoguan based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
