Shangzhou's air quality reflects the Shaanxi southeastern Danjiang River valley's near-complete enclosure between the Qinling and Funiushan mountains at 742 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the agricultural, mining, and tourism corridor contributing local sources. The deeply enclosed mountain valley creates severe winter inversions, while the Qinling barrier's dramatic topographic enclosure maintains Shangzhou among Shaanxi's more topographically challenged southern mountain valley environments throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Shangzhou right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Shangzhou is fair. NO2 is the main pollutant at 33.2/100. Pollution peaks around 11:00 AM (O3: 49.5/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Shangzhou?

When is air pollution at its worst in Shangzhou?

In Shangzhou, vehicle traffic, mining and quarrying operations, as well as agricultural burning are the main local sources, with conditions worsening when the surrounding valley traps air close to the ground. The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. The effect is strongest during the colder months, when inversions set in most often.

Are air quality levels in Shangzhou based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
