Pingxiang in Jiangxi reflects the Jiangxi western Liao River valley's partial enclosure between the Luoxiao Mountains at the Hunan border, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the coal mining, coking, and firecracker — Pingxiang being China's fireworks capital — manufacturing corridor contributing elevated PM2.5 and distinctive chemical aerosols. The fireworks industry's distinctive chemical and metallic aerosol emissions represent Pingxiang's most locally unique air quality characteristic, while winter coal heating under valley inversions compounds industrial emissions throughout the year.

The bowl-like terrain here limits how quickly pollutants can escape. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape.

Are air quality levels in Pingxiang based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
