Pingliang's air quality reflects the Gansu eastern Jing River valley's Loess Plateau semi-arid position at 1,349 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the coal power, agricultural, and light manufacturing corridor contributing local sources. Windblown loess dust contributes elevated PM10, while winter coal heating under valley inversions generates elevated PM2.5 and the elevated plateau position provides somewhat better summer conditions than China's lower-altitude enclosed basins throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Pingliang right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Pingliang is fair. O3 is the main pollutant at 37.6/100. Pollution peaks around 4:00 AM (NO2: 42.6/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Pingliang?

When is air pollution at its worst in Pingliang?

The biggest local contributors to pollution in Pingliang are traffic on the surrounding roads, light manufacturing, and agricultural burning, particularly once calm, stagnant conditions settle in the surrounding valley. The bowl-like terrain here limits how quickly pollutants can escape. Strong seasonal winds can lift dust from the surrounding dry terrain and push particulate levels sharply higher.

Are air quality levels in Pingliang based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
