Pingdu's air quality reflects the flat Shandong northeastern Jiaolai River plain's agricultural and industrial position, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and agricultural processing and light manufacturing contributing local sources. Winter residential coal heating generates elevated PM2.5 under frequent inversions, while the flat terrain allows reasonable summer dispersal and the North China Plain's regional background elevates winter readings throughout the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Pingdu?
The biggest local contributors to pollution in Pingdu are traffic emissions, manufacturing and food processing, and farming and agricultural processing, particularly once dry, windy weather picks up. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape. Residential heating through the colder months is a major seasonal source of particulates.
Are air quality levels in Pingdu based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
