Nanyang's air quality reflects the Nanyang Basin's partial topographic enclosure in the Henan-Hubei-Shaanxi border region, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and agricultural processing and manufacturing contributing local sources. Winter residential coal and biomass burning generates elevated PM2.5 under frequent temperature inversions, while the basin's topographic concentration and the regional North China industrial background maintain moderately elevated provincial readings throughout the winter months.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Nanyang right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Nanyang is poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 69.6/100. Pollution peaks around 12:00 AM (NO2: 69.6/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Nanyang?
On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Nanyang will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at poor at 69.1/100. Pollution peaks around 2:00 PM (O3: 69.1/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Nanyang?
Air quality in Nanyang tends to be worse when vehicle traffic, manufacturing and food processing, together with agricultural activity build up and temperature inversions set in over the valley. The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. Strong seasonal winds can lift dust from the surrounding dry terrain and push particulate levels sharply higher.
Are air quality levels in Nanyang based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
