Kashgar's air quality reflects the Xinjiang Tarim Basin's Kashgar oasis position at 1,289 metres surrounded by the Pamirs, Kunlun, and Tianshan ranges, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the historical Silk Road market, agricultural, and vehicle density corridor contributing local sources. Windblown Taklamakan Desert dust generates severe PM10, while the oasis position's arid continental climate and the surrounding mountain enclosure create concentration under calm conditions throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Kashgar right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Kashgar is poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 64.9/100. Pollution peaks around 7:00 PM (O3: 64.9/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Kashgar?

Kashgar usually sees its poorest air quality when vehicle traffic along with agricultural burning coincide with periods when dry, windy weather picks up. Strong seasonal winds can lift dust from the surrounding dry terrain and push particulate levels sharply higher. These episodes tend to cluster in spring and autumn.

Are air quality levels in Kashgar based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
