Jixi's air quality reflects the Heilongjiang southeastern Mishan River valley's coal mining position near the Russian border, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the coal mining operations — Jixi being one of China's largest coal mining cities — generating elevated coal dust PM10 alongside winter residential coal heating. The surrounding Wanda Mountains create topographic variation, while the extraordinary coal mining scale makes Jixi one of Heilongjiang's most distinctively coal industry-defined urban environments throughout the year.
