Jiamusi's air quality reflects the flat Heilongjiang Songhua River plain's eastern position, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the agricultural processing, paper, and manufacturing corridor contributing local sources. Winter residential coal heating extensively compounds emissions under severe anticyclonic inversions in this extremely cold Northeast China city, while summer conditions are considerably better and Jiamusi generally maintains moderate Heilongjiang provincial eastern corridor readings throughout the winter months.
