Huaihua's air quality reflects the Hunan western Wushui River valley's partial enclosure between the Xuefeng and Wuling mountain ranges, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the agricultural, timber, and manufacturing corridor contributing local sources. The surrounding mountain ranges create significant topographic enclosure, while winter coal heating under valley inversions generates elevated PM2.5 and the relatively lower industrial intensity compared to eastern Hunan generally maintains moderate western Hunan provincial readings.

When is air pollution at its worst in Huaihua?

Huaihua usually sees its poorest air quality when traffic emissions, light manufacturing, together with agricultural burning coincide with periods when temperature inversions set in over the valley. The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape.

Are air quality levels in Huaihua based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
