Fuxin's air quality reflects the Liaoning western Xiuhu River valley's coal mining position, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the coal mining and power generation — Fuxin being one of China's exhausted coal cities — generating elevated coal dust PM10. Winter residential coal heating extensively compounds mining background, while the valley topography creates modest enclosure and Fuxin's coal mining legacy maintains it among Liaoning's more distinctively coal industry-influenced smaller metropolitan environments throughout the year.
