Dingxi's air quality reflects the Gansu Loess Plateau's semi-arid highland position at 1,896 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the surrounding potato farming, traditional Chinese medicine, and construction contributing local sources. Windblown loess plateau dust generates elevated PM10 during dry windy periods, while the elevated plateau position aids dispersal on most days and the relatively low industrial density generally maintains moderate to good northwestern China highland readings throughout most of the year.

These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape. These episodes tend to cluster in spring and autumn.

Are air quality levels in Dingxi based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns.
