Chifeng's air quality reflects the Inner Mongolia southeastern plateau's Xilamulun River valley at 570 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the coal mining, copper, and agricultural corridor contributing local sources. Windblown Inner Mongolian and Mongolian Gobi Desert dust generates elevated PM10 during spring dust storms, while winter coal heating under inversions compounds dust and industrial emissions and Chifeng generally maintains moderate to elevated Inner Mongolian provincial readings throughout the year.
