Changzhi's air quality reflects the Shanxi Shangdang Basin's enclosed highland at 904 metres surrounded by the Taihang and Taiyue mountains, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the coal mining, coking, and chemical corridor generating elevated industrial SO₂ and PM2.5. The basin's near-complete mountain enclosure and winter anticyclonic inversions create among Shanxi's more severe provincial urban winter pollution episodes, while summer conditions are considerably better throughout the warmer months.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Changzhi right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Changzhi is poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 64.5/100. Pollution peaks around 4:00 PM (O3: 64.5/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Changzhi?

When is air pollution at its worst in Changzhi?
Air quality in Changzhi tends to be worse when traffic emissions, petrochemical and refining operations, and quarrying activity build up and the surrounding valley traps air close to the ground. Topographic enclosure in the valley lets pollution accumulate rather than clear out. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape.
Are air quality levels in Changzhi based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
