Bengbu's air quality reflects the flat Huaihe River plain's central Anhui at the Huai River crossing, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the glass manufacturing — Bengbu being China's glass capital — and agricultural corridor contributing elevated glass dust PM10. Winter anticyclonic inversions concentrate industrial and heating emissions, while the flat terrain allows reasonable summer dispersal and the glass manufacturing operations' distinctive silicon dust represents Bengbu's most locally unique industrial emission source throughout the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Bengbu?
The biggest local contributors to pollution in Bengbu are traffic emissions, steel, cement, and chemical production, as well as light manufacturing, particularly once dry, windy weather picks up. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape. Coal and wood used for winter heating add substantially to particulate levels.
Are air quality levels in Bengbu based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
