Baishan's air quality reflects the Jilin Province's mountainous Hunjiang River valley at 520 metres surrounded by the Changbai Mountain range, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the coal mining and manufacturing corridor contributing local sources. Winter residential coal heating extensively compounds mining background under frequent anticyclonic inversions, while summer conditions are considerably better and Baishan generally maintains moderate to elevated Jilin Province mountain corridor readings throughout the winter months.

When is air pollution at its worst in Baishan?

Baishan usually sees its poorest air quality when vehicle traffic, mining and quarrying operations, along with manufacturing activity coincide with periods when calm, stagnant conditions settle in the surrounding valley. The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. Coal and wood used for winter heating add substantially to particulate levels.

Are air quality levels in Baishan based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
