Anqiu's air quality reflects the flat Shandong central Weihe River agricultural corridor, with vehicle traffic and the food processing, chemical, and manufacturing corridor contributing local sources. Winter residential coal heating generates elevated PM2.5 under frequent inversions, while the flat terrain allows reasonable summer dispersal and the North China Plain's regional industrial background elevates winter readings throughout the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Anqiu?
In Anqiu, road traffic, heavy industry such as steel, cement, or petrochemical processing, and light manufacturing are the main local sources, with conditions worsening when dry, windy weather picks up. Strong seasonal winds can lift dust from the surrounding dry terrain and push particulate levels sharply higher. Residential heating through the colder months is a major seasonal source of particulates.
Are air quality levels in Anqiu based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
