Ankang's air quality reflects the Shaanxi southern Han River valley's near-complete topographic enclosure between the Qinling and Daba mountains at 290 metres, with vehicle traffic on surrounding expressways and the agricultural, mining, and manufacturing corridor contributing local sources. The deeply enclosed mountain valley creates severe winter inversions that trap heating and vehicle emissions, while the Qinling-Daba mountain corridor's dramatic topographic enclosure maintains Ankang among Shaanxi's more topographically challenged southern valley environments throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Ankang right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Ankang is fair. PM1 is the main pollutant at 23.1/100. Pollution peaks around 11:00 AM (O3: 54.6/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Ankang?

On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Ankang will be better than today, with AQI forecast at medium at 43.5/100. Pollution peaks around 12:00 AM (NO2: 43.5/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Ankang?

Pollution in Ankang typically rises when traffic emissions, mining operations, along with manufacturing and food processing combine, especially once temperature inversions set in over the valley. The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. Fuel burned for winter heating adds an extra layer of particulates on top of other sources.

Are air quality levels in Ankang based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
