Santiago's air quality reflects the Central Valley's severe topographic trap at 567 metres, with the Andes to the east and the Coastal Range to the west creating near-complete basin enclosure that concentrates vehicle emissions from the Autopista Central and the extraordinary metropolitan vehicle density. The persistent anticyclonic inversion common to the Chilean Mediterranean climate makes Santiago one of South America's most challenging air quality environments, with winter inversion episodes creating some of the continent's most severe urban PM2.5 concentrations throughout the year.
