Rancagua's air quality reflects the Chilean O'Higgins Region Cachapoal River valley's partial topographic enclosure at 226 metres in the Central Valley, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the copper mining — Rancagua being the gateway to the El Teniente world's largest underground copper mine — and agricultural corridor contributing elevated mineral dust PM10. The enclosed Central Valley's Andean and Coastal Range topographic trapping compounds emissions, while the copper mining operations represent Rancagua's most distinctive industrial air quality contribution throughout the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Rancagua?
Pollution in Rancagua typically rises when traffic on the surrounding roads, mining and quarrying operations, and farming and agricultural processing combine, especially once dry, windy weather picks up. These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape. Onshore breezes usually help clear the air, but pollution can build up when winds are light.
Are air quality levels in Rancagua based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
