Coronel's air quality reflects the Chilean Biobío Region's Pacific coastal position adjacent to the Coronel coal-fired power station, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the power station's coal combustion generating elevated SO₂ and PM2.5 alongside the port operations. Consistent Pacific westerlies provide maritime ventilation, while the coal power station's industrial scale represents Coronel's most distinctive local air quality contribution and the outstanding Pacific coastal exposure provides effective background ventilation throughout most of the year.

These wind events can carry dust in from the surrounding arid landscape. Sea breezes typically keep conditions in check, except during still weather.
Are air quality levels in Coronel based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
