Alto Hospicio's air quality reflects the extreme northern Chilean Atacama Desert highland position at 1,000 metres above Iquique, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the residential and logistics corridor contributing local sources. The Pacific Humboldt Current's maritime influence provides ventilation from below, while windblown Atacama Desert and altiplano dust contributes elevated PM10 and the extraordinary desert highland setting creates distinctive local aerosol conditions throughout most of the year.
