Vancouver's air quality benefits from Pacific onshore flow through the Georgia Strait, though summer wildfire smoke from BC's interior periodically overwhelms the port city, and container-terminal shipping traffic adds localized emissions near Burrard Inlet.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Vancouver right now?
On 15 July 2026, overall air quality in Vancouver is fair. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 36.0/100. Pollution peaks around 9:00 AM (O3: 36.0/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Vancouver?

When is air pollution at its worst in Vancouver?
Vancouver's air quality changes through the year largely because of its coastal position between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountains. Winter brings frequent rain that keeps the air clean and washed, while summer's drier stretches can occasionally trap traffic emissions and, in bad wildfire years, smoke drifting in from the BC Interior. Frequent Pacific storms during the cooler months usually clear the air completely within a day.
Are air quality levels in Vancouver based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
