Trail's air quality has historically been shaped by the Teck zinc-lead smelter, one of the world's largest, though modern emission controls have substantially reduced sulphur dioxide levels.

Is air quality bad in Trail right now?
On 15 July 2026, overall air quality in Trail is fair. O3 is the main pollutant at 36.0/100. Pollution peaks around 10:00 PM (NO2: 51.2/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Trail?

When is air pollution at its worst in Trail?
Trail's air quality changes through the year largely because of its lead-zinc smelter in the narrow Columbia River valley. For much of the year the air is clean and forest-fresh, but summer and early autumn carry real risk of smoke episodes when wildfires burn nearby or further north. Wind direction across the river determines how much of the industrial output drifts into town on any given day.
Are air quality levels in Trail based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
