Kardzhali's air quality reflects the Arda river valley in the Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, with vehicle traffic on the E85 and surrounding tobacco farming and hydro-industrial operations contributing local sources. The surrounding Rhodope ridgelines create significant topographic enclosure, while winter residential wood and coal burning generates elevated PM2.5 under frequent valley inversions and summer conditions are considerably better with the highland breezes providing effective natural ventilation throughout the warmer months.
