Dimitrovgrad's air quality in Bulgaria reflects the Maritsa river valley in the southern Thracian plain, with the Toplofikatsia thermoelectric power station and surrounding chemical and cement operations generating elevated SO₂ and industrial PM2.5 alongside vehicle traffic on the A1 motorway. The flat Thracian plain generally allows reasonable dispersal, while the Rhodope Mountains to the south and the Sredna Gora to the north create partial topographic enclosure, and winter residential heating compounds the industrial emissions throughout the year.
