Burgas' air quality reflects its position on the Black Sea coast in southeastern Bulgaria, with the Lukoil Neftochim Burgas oil refinery — Bulgaria's largest industrial facility — generating elevated SO₂, VOCs, and PM2.5 alongside vehicle traffic on the A1 motorway and port operations. Black Sea easterly and northeasterly breezes provide maritime ventilation on most days, while calm anticyclonic conditions allow refinery plumes to concentrate over the low-lying Burgas Bay coastal plain under westerly backing wind conditions.
