Tuzla's air quality faces significant industrial challenges from its position at the heart of the Bosnian Tuzla Basin's coal mining and thermal power complex, with the Termoelektrana Tuzla coal power station generating elevated SO₂ and industrial PM2.5 alongside the surrounding mining and salt mining operations. The enclosed Tuzla Basin's topographic concentration and winter temperature inversions regularly produce among the Balkans' most severe urban air quality episodes, making Tuzla one of southeastern Europe's most persistently coal energy-challenged urban environments throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Tuzla right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Tuzla is fair. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 38.7/100. Pollution peaks around 1:00 PM (O3: 38.7/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Tuzla?

On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Tuzla will be similar to today, with NO2 forecast at fair at 38.5/100. Pollution peaks around 12:00 PM (O3: 45.1/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Tuzla?

In Tuzla, energy sector operations together with mining and quarrying operations are the main local sources, with conditions worsening when temperature inversions set in over the valley. The surrounding valley terrain holds pollutants near the surface rather than letting them disperse. Strong seasonal winds can lift dust from the surrounding dry terrain and push particulate levels sharply higher.

Are air quality levels in Tuzla based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
