Sarajevo's air quality faces some of Europe's most severe challenges, with the city's dramatic bowl-shaped topography surrounded on all sides by the Dinaric Alps creating one of the continent's most extreme pollution traps. Residential wood and coal burning, vehicle emissions from the M17 corridor, and industrial sources combine with persistent winter temperature inversions that can trap emissions for days, making Sarajevo's winter air quality among the worst regularly recorded in any European capital.
