Cochabamba's air quality reflects the Bolivian Cochabamba Valley's enclosed basin at 2,558 metres surrounded by the Eastern and Western Cordillera, with vehicle density and manufacturing generating elevated PM2.5 under persistent inversions. The basin's near-complete mountain enclosure creates significant topographic trapping, while the elevated altitude worsens ozone formation and Cochabamba generally maintains moderate to elevated Bolivian highland valley readings throughout most of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Cochabamba right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Cochabamba is fair. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 21.6/100. Pollution peaks around 8:00 AM (PM2.5: 21.6/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Cochabamba?

On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Cochabamba will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at fair at 21.7/100. Pollution peaks around 11:00 PM (PM2.5: 21.7/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Cochabamba?

Cochabamba usually sees its poorest air quality when traffic on the surrounding roads together with manufacturing activity coincide with periods when temperature inversions set in over the valley. Topographic enclosure in the valley lets pollution accumulate rather than clear out. Heat and sunlight combine with emissions to form ozone at ground level.

Are air quality levels in Cochabamba based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
